For the second year in a row, swallows have built a nest on our front porch, and their building skills have even impressed my engineer-minded husband.
We also had a nest of swallows on our back porch last year, but that nest was made inside of a pink solo cup which we’d put into one corner to cover a hole. You can imagine how surprised I was to find that a swallow had made its nest there, and went in search of something larger.
Finding a wire container, I put some burlap fabric in it and secured it to the porch column and asked a neighbor to help me move the solo cup of baby swallows into it. Amazingly, my engineering for this swallow nest worked and we really enjoyed them being there. I also discovered that they aren’t shy!
